GARDEN TOUR - 2005
June 26th 1pm to 5pm
1. The GLAHS Museum - 118 W Lincoln Street
The Museum features an herb garden containing a variety of culinary and medicinal
herbs. Visitors will learn about the various herb plantings and how they can be used.
2. The Grand Ledge Opera House - 121 S. Bridge Street
The Opera House offers a river bank view from a beautiful gazebo surrounded by rose
bushes, four memorial gardens with a variety of perennials, annuals and memorial trees.
3. John and Gretchen Gleason – 234 Elizabeth St.
From the moment you start down the winding path that leads to the back yard, you
experience the tranquility of this Sanctuary Garden. By layering a wide variety of plants,
including ornamental grasses, master gardener John Gleason has transformed this small
space into a place of balance and harmony.
4. Susan Stratton – 302 E. Jefferson St.
The friends and family of Susan Stratton can enjoy a cool breeze on the front porch of this
stately 1857 Italianate home or enjoy a cool dip in the beautiful in-ground pool in the back
yard. The pool fountain and the fragrance from the pink and white phlox create a
delightful ambience for the outdoor breakfast room. Come and see why everyone “phlox”
to the Stratton poolside garden.
5. Ed and Carol Basso – 11569 Stone Bluff Dr.
A Nantucket garden of pinks and lavenders welcomes you to this lovely home and a hand-
painted periwinkle Grand Ledge moose stands watch on the hill. In this garden you will
find a variety of pieces that have been hand-painted by Carol tucked here and there
amongst the flowers, as well as a grapevine arbor that shades a statue of Venus.
6. Shirlee Fox – 821 Willow Highway
The garden gate invites the curious to wander back into an expanse of beautiful gardens.
Complete with a breathtaking river view, the property offers a rock garden, quaint potting
shed, garden ornaments, birdhouses and feeders, and plenty of lovely flowers and plants.
7. Robert and Vicki Paski – 1029 Willow Highway
When the Paski’s bought their house on the river in 1984, a red cow barn sat on the
property. Too costly to renovate, they began to tear down the pre-1900s barn. To the
delight of the Paski’s, the demolition uncovered a beautiful stone wall and cement floor
that they used to create a beautiful outdoor space referred to as their “terrazzo.” Celtic
knots laid in brick wind around a fountain centered in the terrazzo and a gargoyle watches
over all.
8. Duff and Diane Schad – 6104 Peachtree Dr.
The Schads invite you to join them for a glass of ice tea and a walk through their secret
garden. Musical melodies lilt through the air as you stroll through an English formal
garden with a southern twist. In addition, the Schads have incorporated two fountains
and a variety of other gardening styles to create a wonderful outdoor experience.
